It's Complicated works with therapists across the world — some are individuals (B2C), while most run their own businesses (B2B). Since we serve both and operate across different countries, our subscription pricing is VAT-exclusive by default. This means the prices you see on our website reflect the true cost of the service before any tax is applied.
How VAT is calculated
All prices on our website are listed excluding VAT. When you reach the checkout page, we calculate and apply VAT based on your country and business status:
- Based in Germany, or an individual in the EU without a VAT ID (B2C): VAT is added to your subscription price at the local applicable rate.
- Based in the EU (outside Germany) with a valid VAT ID (B2B): No VAT is added to your subscription. Reverse charge applies.
- Based outside the EU: VAT usually does not apply and will not be added to your subscription price.
In short, you only pay VAT if you're legally required to.
How to provide your VAT ID
During checkout: When you subscribe for the first time, you'll be asked if you are purchasing the subscription as a business. Check this box and enter a valid VAT ID — this will remove the VAT from your invoice and apply a reverse charge.
After checkout: If you're already on an active subscription and want to add your VAT ID, go to Settings → Subscription in your dashboard and click Go to customer portal. From there, you can update your billing details and provide your VAT ID.
Common questions
💬 Where can I find my VAT invoice?
Your invoices are available in the Stripe customer portal. Go to Settings → Subscription in your dashboard and click Go to customer portal to view and download your invoices.
💬 I registered my business after subscribing. Can I add my VAT ID now?
Yes. Follow the steps in the "After checkout" section above to add your VAT ID via the Stripe customer portal. The reverse charge will apply to future invoices.
💬 Why was I charged VAT if I have a VAT ID?
Make sure your VAT ID has been entered correctly in the Stripe customer portal and that it is valid for EU VAT purposes. You can verify your VAT ID using the European Commission's VIES VAT validation tool. If your VAT ID is valid and you're still being charged VAT, contact our support team at support@complicated.life and we'll help you resolve it.
