It's Complicated allows you to export a full set of data for any client at any time, giving you a complete record you can store, share or archive as needed.
What's included in an export
A client data export includes all of the following:
- Session notes
- Appointment history
- Invoices
- Messages
The export is delivered as a password-protected ZIP file containing your data in JSON format.
How to export client data
- Go to your Client Center and open the profile of the client you'd like to export data for.
- Click the three-dot menu (⋮) in the top right of the client's profile.
- Select Export Data from the dropdown menu.
- In the Export Data modal, click Create New Export.
- Your export will be prepared — this may take a moment. You'll see an "Export in progress" state while it processes.
- Once ready, the export will appear under Export History with a "Ready" status. Click Copy password to retrieve the password you'll need to open the file.
- The export will also be sent to your registered email address for safekeeping.
Opening your export
Your export arrives as a ZIP file — for example client_export_20260416_054924.zip. You'll need the password shown in the Export History to open it. Make sure to copy it before closing the modal.
The data inside is in JSON format, which can be opened with any standard text editor or imported into other tools that support JSON.
