As you may know, some therapists are legally required to have an active professional liability insurance in order to practice. This type of insurance protects you in case a client files a legal claim related to your professional work — for example, due to perceived harm or negligence. Whether or not liability insurance is required for you depends on two main factors:
The country you’re practicing in
Your professional title and legal status
Given the diversity of our therapist network, including more than 2,500 therapists from almost 70 countries, it’s not possible for us as a platform to keep track of the legal requirements in every region or profession.
That’s why, at It’s Complicated, we do not verify your insurance status. Instead, you’ll now find an information box in the Verification Section of your profile. This box serves as a reminder that:
Liability insurance may be a legal requirement for your practice
It’s your responsibility to know the rules that apply in your country and profession
You must ensure you comply with all local laws and regulations
We do not ask you to upload any insurance documents, since this requirement doesn’t apply to all therapists on our platform. If you are unsure whether you are required to hold professional liability insurance, please check the legal requirements in your country or reach out to your local professional association for guidance.
