Professional liability insurance protects you in case a client files a legal claim related to your professional work — for example, due to perceived harm or negligence. In most countries, this type of insurance is mandatory for private mental health practitioners. We strongly recommend that all therapists on It’s Complicated obtain this insurance.
Do I need liability insurance?
Whether liability insurance is required for you depends on two main factors:
- The country you’re practising in — insurance requirements vary significantly between countries and sometimes between regions within a country.
- Your professional title and legal status — the rules may differ depending on whether you’re a licensed psychotherapist, psychologist, counsellor, or coach.
If you’re unsure whether you need liability insurance, we recommend contacting your local professional association, training institute, or supervisor for guidance. You can also check the country-specific requirements articles in our Help Center, which may include relevant details for your region.
How It’s Complicated handles insurance
Given the diversity of our therapist network — more than 2,500 therapists from almost 70 countries — it’s not possible for us to track the legal requirements in every region or profession. For this reason, we do not verify your insurance status and do not ask you to upload any insurance documents, since this requirement doesn’t apply to all therapists on our platform.
⚠️ Important: Even if liability insurance is not legally required in your jurisdiction, having it is considered best practice. It protects both you and your clients in the event of a dispute.
