At It's Complicated, we’re committed to building a trusted and legally compliant platform for both therapists and clients. As part of our quality management requirements, we require all therapists to verify their location. This helps us ensure that clients can trust the information displayed on your profile, especially if you offer in-person therapy. Also, it's a necessary step to comply with legal requirements regarding professional titles, credentials, and location-based regulations.
What location verification means
Therapists must upload a valid document proving they are based where they say they are. You can upload your document in the Verification Section of your dashboard. Please make sure the document shows your full name, current address, and the issue date and is no older than 6 months. Accepted documents include:
Utility bills dated within the last 6 months (electricity, gas, water, etc.)
Official residence registration documents or government documents
🔒 Note: These documents are strictly for internal verification purposes and will not be visible for clients on your public profile.
Why we require this
There are two main reasons why we've decided to introduce this requirement:
- Trust and transparency — clients need to feel confident that their therapist is genuinely located where they claim to be. In the past, we've encountered cases where therapists listed inaccurate locations (e.g. a large city instead of a smaller town) to attract more clients. This undermines trust and creates confusion for clients seeking local or in-person care.
- Legal compliance — professional titles and qualification requirements differ significantly between countries, and sometimes between regions. For example, someone trained as a psychotherapist in one country may not be permitted to use that title in another. Verifying your location helps us ensure your qualifications align with local regulations.
Location Locking & Change Requests
Once your location is verified, it will be locked in your profile. This means you won’t be able to change it yourself, and any updates will need to be reviewed and approved by our team.
For example, if you move from Barcelona to Berlin, you go to the edit profile section, change your location there, and upload a new document showing that you're now based in Berlin. We then review your documentation and approve the change once the document meets our criteria.
⚠️ Important: If you move to a different country, your professional title and credentials may also need to be reviewed, as requirements vary by location. See Global requirements for therapists for details.
